DETAILS

The witness statements are reproduced below and in no particular order. All details which could identify the witnesses have been removed.

"We were in bed dozing off when my partner looked up out of our large velux window and witnessed an orange light in the sky. It was larger than ordinary aircraft light and not accompanied by any other lights. It was travelling at a moderate speed. We got up and opened the velux window and noticed another orange light close by, they travelled in straight line for a short time and then stayed still in the same spot for about 60 seconds. At this point we grabbed a mobile phone and tried to film them. We did capture some movement on the film. One of the orange lights disappeared without us noticing it going, then as we watched the second one it seemed to fade quite quickly as it went off into the distance in the direction of burnley/preston."

"we were outside having a cigarrette when we noticed a strange orange light in the sky, we watched for a while and then noticed a couple more in the sky we then watched as they crossed the sky, blinked for a couple of seconds and then disapeared. we have seen aprox 6 of these lights in the space of 5 minutes."

"up to a dozen bright orange spherical shaped objects circling around sale/altrincham.going at some speed."

"myself and kids were looking out at fireworks from the back window i said look at this 1 thinking it was a rocket (orange/red) colour it carried on going up and nothing happened so i shouted my wife as it started to pass the back of the house it carried on so i ran to the front of the house were it kept going towards wales i rang my parents as they have seen things in the sky before i got a call about 30mins later they had witnessed something similiar an orange light coming from direction of my house towards eastham both light had no flashing or to slow for a plane that low."

"Five bright orange lights shot across the sky, all of them was together. at first i thought they was shooting stars and my friend said they was planes but then one of the lights stopped as if it was floating in the air for about 20 seconds then flew off and caught up with the other for lights, then they all flew off and vanished. at least i know other people have seen these lights too."

"one orange objects followed by two pairs followed by numurous other balls of orange light,no sound east to west toward blue bell hill. condition good no visable plane lights just balls of orange light even watched though bonoculors still bright orange then disapppered as when over bluebell hill location. NO fireworks visiable and no sound from objects."

"I prefer to think of this as a SOL - strange orange lights - rather than ufo. Sorry, no compass for directions. My husband and I were both sober, on new years eve going to a friends house. On the way there, I noticed what I first took to be an aeroplanes light - I then realised, it was orange not red and it wasn't flashing. I asked my husband to pull over - and I wound the window down. The orange light was not in a continual climb/drop (we see lots of planes as we live on a route for manchester airport). We watched it for about a minute or two before going to our friends. When we came home, arriving just before midnight - I noticed another orange light in the sky - again, it was silent - it flew in the direction of a straight path over our house. We went indoors, I was at the loo when my husband called me as there were another two - I went out and immediately saw a third. They were coming from different directions but seemed to be heading the same way. We went back indoors - and viewed from the rear of the house - where we saw at least another six over the next half hour."

"having a smoke about 10.30pm saw orange light appearing to be moving upwards from NNE to SSW direction. believed it to be flare, but the orange light kept moving slowely. moved out of sight and i went back into house."

"We were in the living room watching the new year festivities on TV, when my daughter noticed 3 strange lights in the sky through the living room window. They were a good distance away, moving slowly in a southerly direction. I thought they were moving in a straight line, with one at the top and 2 underneath, forming a large triangle. My estimation is that they were moving North to Souith, as our house faces Southwest. After watching them for a minute or so, two more appeared moving from right to left as well, both on the lower level, behind the 2 at the base of the triangle. They were fixed bright orange lights, not flashing at all. I attempted to video them but the light conditions and distance meant I only got some hazy footage of a light in the sky. The sky was perfctly clear and I'm guessing they were at least a mile or two away, and must have been a considerable size - maybe the size of a helicopter - they looked about the size of a large star, but they were moving! The time was exactly 12.10 am on new year's day, and we watched them for about 2 to 3 minutes before they disappeared in the direction of Liverpool. My partner and daughter also witnessed this stange event."

"i was walking back to my car and looked up at the sky to look at fireworks at new year. I saw a large orange light in the sky pulsating. It made no noise and had no aircraft lights. It seemed to be dark in the centre. I watched it climb higher into the sky moving away from winter hill. It climbed very high but was still visible. I walked further down the road and saw another three or four orange spheres moving in the same direction and climbing higher into the sky as they moved away."

"just after midnight i went to back door for a fag when i saw these red orange lights in the sky at first there was 2 very close togather looked weared i called my landlady to come and see she could not believe it her self in total there was about 15 or 20 of these things my landlady tried to phone radio station but could not get through it was very clear not a cloud in sky."

"Bright orange light passed over in front of house just after midnight. No noise. Followed by a second a few minutes later on exactly the same path, witnessed by myself and my wife. Soon followed by three further ones in a parallel path. This continued until about one o'clock. The objects passed over Caerphilly mountain towards Cardiff. Attempted to film on phone have some images but not of high quality. Weather conditions were cold and clear."

"Walking the dogs along country lanes. Two orange lights appeared from far off in the sky on the horizon (above North Sea) and travelled very fast up into the sky above. There was no noise, absolute silence (the norfolk village is very rural and there are no street lights, cars (roads were very icy and not traffic). The two lights sped above our heads (I was walking with my friend and two dogs) in parallel - very high up; and were obvioulsy not helicopter/airplane/microlight/flares or lannterns - these two disppeared behind clouds and then another single one appeared from the same source and took the same trajectory/line - then a fourth and then finally a fifth. Each time the light remained organge/bright and strong and did not waver - what was more interesting was that they all followed the exact same route across the sky."

"i was watching fireworks out of my bedroom window at midnight with my wife when we spotted five red lights in the sky low on the horizon they moved in formation then we spotted more lights just the same they all seemed to be moving deliberatley not haphazardly in all their must have been twenty or more some overhead high in the sky after fortyfive min they were gone."

"I was in my front garden shortly after the New Year had arrived. I was watching fireworks exploding and was about to go back imnside when I saw 4 large orange lights in the south. They were silent and moving in a Westerly direction. They were arranged diagonally, the highest one on the right. As I watched, they slowlty faded and dissapeared apart from the furthest left one which came to a standstill and remained in the same position for about 10 mins before dissapearing."

"Whilst dog walking at approx 18:30hrs, I witnessed 2 orange lights fly in close formation. They displayed no navigation lights or made any sound. I initially considered them to be "Lanterns" until they looped and made a second pass of my location. These were not lanterns."

"i was in the back garden of my mother in laws and basically at first it looked liked a ball of fire movin slowly as it got further away it faded and then when i turned away it just disappered, i realise it may of been something else but i have no idea what?? can anyone enlighten me??"

 CASEWORK AND STATUS

The witnesses completed online report forms over the New Year period and were contacted by LAPIS shortly afterwards.

The weather conditions on the night in question in all areas were checked and found to be light cloud or clear skies, cold with lightish winds. The UFOs made no strange movements nor acted in any unusual manner and appeared to be following the direction of the wind. Some objects appeared to speed away (i.e. disappear into the distance) but in fact if the objects had just simply faded out then it would have given the same visual effect. It is also impossible to judge the speed of an object in the air from the ground because the height of the object is not known and therefore all estimates of speed can be disregarded. The objects which appeared to loop for a second pass were not in fact observed for the full duration of flight. The second pass in our opinion was a second salvo of lanterns from the same location as the first which gave the effect of the objects returning for a second flight.

In view of the available evidence i.e. the colour of the objects, the weather conditions and the lack of unusual motion or action by the UFOs, our conclusion is...

Cases Closed - Probable Identification (Lanterns).

An example of what we mean by a lantern can be seen in the video below.
