DETAILS

The witness statement is reproduced below. Anything which identifies the witness has been removed.

"Leaving works yard at approx 17:20, the sound of a helicopter made me look up, I saw an bright orange round orb in a north east direction, It was very bright, about the size of a street light and was travelling fairly quickly. It was then i realised the helicopter was police helicopter, and appeared to be observing and following it, I would guess the chopper was travelling at about 50mph, It seemed slower than other helicopters i have obsereved during a regular flight, it was flying parrallel and slightly behind about a football pitches distance from the orb, they remained at this distance from each other as they both travelled south west untill they were both obstructed by the surrounding biuldings.

There was not a breeze in the air, which is why i believe it was NOT a sky lantern, Many other people MUST have seen this!"

CASEWORK AND STATUS

The witness completed an online report form on 7 January 2010 and was contacted by LAPIS shortly afterwards.

The weather conditions for the Blackpool area for that date were examined. The witness stated that there was zero wind on the evening in question. However, a check of the historical weather records for Blackpool for that day show that a there was a very light breeze of 3-4mph which was blowing from a north-north-easterly direction (the same direction from which the object appeared).

The evening of the 7th Jan 2010 was also notable for being very cold and the ground was covered with snow and ice. It coincided with our main monthly group meeting and we all sat around in the Guards Club with double layered coats on to keep warm. It was an evening that group member Lizzy will never forget as she shivered all the way through the meeting and all the way home!

Our conclusion is based on the available evidence (very cold and a light breeze - perfect for flying a lantern) and the fact that the UFO made no strange movements nor acted in any unusual manner. There were no obvious physical effects on the witness. The police helicopter in our view was coincidental to the UFO sighting and could have been some distance from the object because it is impossible to judge how far away an aerial object is from the ground.

Case Closed - Probable Identification (Lantern).

An example of what we mean by a lantern can be seen in the video below.
